Citizen Science at
Huskisson Public School
An important part of the Plastic Pollution Solutions educational program is to bring awareness about the amount and types of plastic litter that can be found hiding in your school or community. After taking a small sample, we sort and count it according to the guidelines of the Australian Marine Debris Initiative database.
As we record it on the database, it becomes evident which types of litter are the biggest problem. We then workshop ways to reduce or eliminate this litter using the Four R's; REFUSE, REDUCE, RE-USE, RECYCLE.
Merrimac State School - Eco Warriors
A litter audit in the playgrounds at Merrimac State School revealed 518 items including quite a lot of single-use plastic cups from frozen fruit drinks. The MSS Eco Warrior team began brainstorming ideas to eliminate these pesky cups whilst still allowing students to enjoy their favourite frozen fruit snack! We love your work MSS Eco Warriors.
EarthSmart Leaders in action at Peregian Springs State School
The ES Leaders went on a 15 minute scavenge for litter in their school grounds which was pretty clean and tidy for such a big school. We still found 160 items and so brainstormed ways that we can eliminate these through some creative school initiatives!
